Course Exemption vs Course Substitution

Course Exemption vs Course Substitution

When maneuvering through your academic journey, distinguishing between course exemption and course substitution is crucial. Let’s break down these terms to help you make informed decisions about your academic path.

Course Exemption: Swapping Credits Across Different Institutions

A course exemption is your ticket to replacing a UB course with credits earned from another institution. If you’ve successfully completed coursework elsewhere and wish to have those credits count for a UB course, the exemption process is your avenue. Typically, these exemptions are granted upon your admission to the university and are processed by the registrar’s department. You’ll find the exempted courses marked with a ‘T’ on your transcript, listed before the commencement of your first semester at UB.

Course Substitution: Swapping Credits Within Your Own Institution

Course substitution, on the other hand, comes into play when you need to tweak the classes listed on your UB transcript. Below are the scenarios applicable for a course substitution.

  1. Higher Level Class Achievement: Let’s say you changed majors, and a class that was required for the previous major is higher than the class required for your new major. For example, if you’ve completed a higher-level class like Math 167 for Bio-chem but your Business program requires Math 163, a course substitution lets you swap the courses to align with your current academic contract.

  2. Course Code Changes or Discontinuation: The academic contract upgrades every 5 years. Hence, a course code on your contract might change, or a listed course might no longer be available. In such cases, a course substitution allows you to seamlessly replace the outdated or unavailable course with a suitable alternative listed on your initial contract.

  3. Adaptation to Program Changes: If the course requirements for your major undergo a transformation, a course substitution allows you to align your academic plan with the latest program specifications.

In essence, course exemption allows you to receive UB credits for classes taken outside of UB, while course substitution acts as your tool for altering your UB course lineup to fulfill your academic contract requirements. Understanding when to employ each allows you to navigate the twists and turns of your academic journey with confidence. So, whether you’re bringing in external achievements or adapting to the ever-evolving academic shifts, these tools ensure your journey at UB remains a seamless experience.
